Today I will return to talk about the cartoon of the The Real Ghostbusters, and now it is the turn of the character Janine Melnitz. The irreverent secretary, who always attracted attention for her way of dressing, with striking accessories and extravagant hairstyle. Who, although she did not have a leading role and rarely participated in the action of the series, was an important piece in the development of the history of the Ghostbusters, especially in the comedy of the cartoon. And despite her flamboyant looks, she always added a feminine touch to the show.
Janine was in charge of keeping the Ghostbusters business in order, she was the one who paid the bills and attended to the clients. But for her this meant more than just a job, since she had a great relationship with all the team members. Especially with Egon, with whom Janine was always in love, and despite the fact that apparently Egon also had affection for her, his inability to demonstrate his emotions towards other people, always prevented them from having a romantic relationship. In addition, she also had a very close relationship with Peter, but in this case she took the role of the older sister, since they were always arguing or making fun of each other with sarcastic jokes.
Did you know that for the third season of Ghostbusters the design and personality of Janine's character changed?
After the first two seasons of the cartoon were successful, the producers hired consultants to suggest improvements to the show. Among the observations they made, was to change Janine's design for a more aesthetic one, remove her pointed glasses and replace them with round ones, supposedly so that she did not scare the children, they also suggested that she should wear a longer skirt. In addition, they were advised to change her personality so that she was no longer so irreverent and sarcastic, she should now have a softer and calmer personality, so that she would be the mother figure in Ghostbusters. They also changed the actress who voiced Janine, so that the character no longer had a Brooklyn accent. After all these changes were imposed on the creative team, the main writer of the cartoon J. Michael Straczynski decided to resign. But some time later he was re-hired to write an episode of season six, where it is related that all those changes that Janine suffered, were due to a demon that had deceived her, making her believe that he was her fairy godmother and that he was helping her to become prettiest and friendliest to win Egon's heart. But the reality was that the demon was feeding on her emotions, and if she continued like this, Janine would be completely consumed and would eventually become a demon as well. Fortunately, Slimer realized this and alerted the Ghostbusters, who devised a plan to fight the demon. At the end of the chapter, Egon sincerely confesses to Janine that he is also in love with her, and with this they finish defeating the demon and eliminate the influence that he still exerted on Janine.
In Extreme Ghostbusters, Janine once again plays an important role in the plot of the story. Years after the Ghostbusters were dissolved, Janine was constantly changing jobs. And she decided to go back to school again, so she enrolled in the course taught by Egon, where paranormal phenomena were studied. Once Egon, Slimer and Janine were reunited, they witnessed the appearance of a very powerful spectrum called Achira. Furthermore, they also noticed an increase in the city's paranormal activity. Because of this, they became convinced to form a new Ghostbusters team. And so Janine resumed the role of secretary. And the maternal personality that was once imposed on her came better for her in this version, since the new team they formed was made up of younger characters. And regarding the relationship she had with Egon, it was very similar to the first cartoon, Janine was still in love with him, and although Egon was also in love with her, the relationship never progressed beyond platonic love.
Finally, I want to mention that Janine sometimes took part in the action of the cartoon. She had to put on the Ghostbusters uniform and use a proton pack to help the other team members in difficult situations. With this I say goodbye, I leave you with today's illustration and see you in the next post.
