As I had said in the previous post, I will be adding several useful resources that can be used on websites or other design projects. And this time I bring you a collection of icons inspired by the characters of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles universe. I know that these icons are not very generic, so I don't think you can use them in many of your projects, but keep in mind that I made them just for fun and I hope you can use them for the same purpose too.
When I made the icons I tried to draw the simplest possible shapes and only include the most representative details of the characters. Also I only used three colors for each of them (but when I was adding more complex and less known characters I had to use more colors and include more details). I think that in general they were very good, quite simple but preserving the essence of the characters. I think they can be used in mockups of websites or mobile applications. Personally I will use them to print them on a T-Shirt. You will find other places to use them.
Did you know that the names of ninja turtles are inspired by four great Italian artists of the Renaissance period?
Who would have imagined that in this series full of such bizarre characters, there are some references to such important characters in the story. In most versions, it was Master Splinter who named the turtles that way. However, in some other versions like in the 2014 movie, it was April who gave them the names. Below I will briefly talk to you about these characters who inspired the names of our heroes.
Leo was named after Leonardo da Vinci (Leonardo di ser Piero da Vinci, 1452 - 1519) a Florentine polymath who was at the same time a painter, anatomist, architect, paleontologist, botanist, writer, sculptor, philosopher, engineer, inventor, musician, poet and urban planner. Frequently described as an archetype and symbol of Renaissance man, a universal genius, as well as a humanist philosopher whose infinite curiosity can only be matched by his inventive capacity.
Donnie was named after a Florence-born sculptor known as Donatello (Donato di Niccolo di Betto Bardi, 1386 - 1466), he developed a new Renaissance style in sculpture that gave him a long and productive career.
Mikey was named after Michelangelo (Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni, 1475 - 1564) a sculptor, painter, architect and poet born in Florence, who exerted an unparalleled influence on the development of Western art. His artistic versatility was of such a high order that he is often considered a contender for the title of the archetypal Renaissance man, along with his rival, the fellow Florentine, Leonardo da Vinci. Several scholars have described Michelangelo as the greatest artist of his age and even as the greatest artist of all time.
Raph was named after Raphael (Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino, 1483 - 1520) a painter and architect, his work is admired for its clarity of form, ease of composition, and visual achievement of the Neoplatonic ideal of human grandeur. Together with Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci, he forms the traditional trinity of great masters of the Renaissance period.
To start I share the first eight icons in the collection, which include the main characters of the series. First we have the four turtles (very easy, it's the same shape only change the color). Then there are Master Splinter, April O'Neil, Casey Jones, and the main villain, Shredder. I think the latter is not only the main antagonist of the franchise, but in my personal opinion, is one of the most important villains of all time in movies and cartoons. And regarding Casey, I must tell you that together with Leo they are my favorite heroes in the TMNT universe.
Update (05/29/2020): Today I add eight more icons to the collection, to include the main villains in the series. From the start we have the most recurring in the cartoon: Krang, a Foot Ninja, Bebop & Rocksteady. I love the character Krang, especially with the design and personality they gave him in the movie "Out of the Shadows". And of course, the inseparable duo Bebop & Rocksteady could not be missing in this update, the typical comical villains who never tire of being hit by the turtles. Then there are Dr. Baxter Stockman, Leatherhead, Rat King and Slash. As you can see Stockman is in his mutant fly form. And for Slash I used the colors of one of the most modern versions, since the version that appeared in 1987 I really didn't like.
You can use the icons completely free for everything you need. Over time I will add more characters to the collection, so if you liked them, do not forget to periodically visit this post. It's all for today mutants, see you in the next post.
